Door de middelpuntvliedende kracht worden de vaste deeltjes tegen de trommelwand geduwd, waarna de vijzel deze naar de uitlaat voor vaste deeltjes transporteert. De gescheiden en gezuiverde oliefase wordt door de zwaartekracht afgevoerd via de vloeistofuitlaat die wordt geregeld door membranen van de decanter, terwijl de vaste fase de decanter verlaat via de uitlaat voor vaste stoffen.
